Odds and Ends

This page contains a mixture of relevant bits and bobs noticed and discovered while putting together the main list.

  1. No Numbers
Books published in the Leopard format but without the number – also the leopards on the cover don’t seem to have any spots – they are entirely black.
    Robert Louis Stevenson – Catriona

    Robert Louis Stevenson – Kidnapped

Robert Louis Stevenson – Treasure Island

Robert Louis Stevenson – The Black Arrow

    1. Leopards that changed their spots
Books that came out with variant covers (but remained numbered Leopards)

1 Giuseppe Tomasso de Lampedusa – The Leopard

This copy is identical to the one shown in the main list, but is not numbered.

2 Boris Pasternak – Doctor Zhivago

      3 Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn – The Gulag Archipelago 1918 – 56

[This second variant is the same as the one on the main 1-25 page, but this one shows no number on the back]

4 Jonathan Raban – Soft City

      16 Homer – The Odyssey

20 Georges Perec – Life A Users Manual [this set of variants is – we think – unique in the series as the cover design remained the same but came in at least six colourways: black, red, two blues, yellow and green]

24 Mikhail Bulgakov – The Heart of a Dog

25 Vincent Cronin – Louis and Antoinette

29 Peter Matthiessen – Under the Mountain Wall

30 Peter Matthiessen – The Snow Leopard

41 Vincent Cronin – Catherine, Empress of All the Russias

46 Georges Perec – W or the Memory of Childhood

50 Mikhail Bulgakov – The White Guard

62 Vincent Cronin – Louis XIV

63 David Gilmour – The Last Leopard

95 C K Stead – The Death of the Body

      105 Henry Green – Loving

116 Vasily Grossman – Life and Fate

121 Peter Matthiessen – African Silences

125 Javier Marias – All Souls

      179 Georges Perec – A Void

      208 Cees Nooteboom – Rituals

  2. Nearly-Leopards
Books that were on the list(s) but are not known to have come out in Leopard format. Some images exist on the internet of some of these in the “right” format, so we would love to hear about it if you find a real copy.
Anna Maria Ortese – The Lament of the Linnet (listed as 241).
Lidya Ginzburg – A Woman at her Desk (listed as 248)
    W. G. Sebald – The Rings of Saturn (listed as 249)
Yashar Kemal – The Foundling (listed as 250)
Mayra Montero – You, Darkness (listed as 251)
Jean Giono – Second Harvest (listed as 263 and 264)

Let us know if you spot one! Non-Leopard Harvills exist of many of these, but that’s another matter entirely.

4. Numbers without titles

We don’t have titles that correspond to the following numbers:

76 (there are two 77s and one of them is listed as 76 so it may be no 76 exists)
102 (there are two 93s and one of them is listed as 102 so it may be no 102 exists)
138 (there are two 146s and one of them is listed as 138 so it may be no 138 exists)
196  Vasily Grossman – Life and Fate (this is also listed as 116 and we have pictures of this title as 116 (with two different covers!) but we have not found a copy numbered 196. It may be no 196 exists.
249 (In the list number 249 is The Rings of Saturn by W. G. Sebald but that book was not published in the Leopard format.)
